We're a natural chemistry company redefining how products get made, making them cleaner and healthier for us.

Natural silk is an incredible force with applications beyond compare — and imagination. We were first to tap its power, developing an unprecedented platform: Liquid SilkTM technology. Our patented platform allows products to be made in a way that's good for people and the planet while enhancing the product's performance. Liquid Silk, invented and manufactured in Boston, MA, is a game-changer for countless industries, from textiles to medical.

Pure silk protein from natural silk cocoons and water. That's Liquid Silk. It's beautifully simple, yet incredibly powerful.

Powerful because silk, a natural polymer, in liquid form, functions to replace the finishing agents, additives, stabilizers and microplastics—many of them containing contaminant byproducts—common in everyday products, like lotions and clothes.

Powerful because a product that may have had dozens of risky ingredients—some of which may accumulate in the body—can now have only a handful of healthy ones.

And powerful because with Liquid Silk there are no trade-offs for people, for the planet, or for the product itself.

Applying Liquid Silk Technology: Endless Possibilities

Liquid Silk can replace petrochemical-based finishing agents on virtually any type of material — from nylon and polyester to leather and cashmere. But the really amazing part is that Liquid Silk replicates—or even outperforms—the benefits of those synthetic chemicals. No compromises. Good all around.

Silk Therapeutics: our premium skincare line. Liquid Silk is the active ingredient and the replacement for dozens of harsh preservatives and fillers often found in mass and high-end skincare products. And because of Liquid Silk, each of our products contains no more than 12 ingredients and is good for all skin types.

Our founders' first innovation with natural silk technology was medical: they developed the first FDA-approved implantable silk medical device for soft tissue reconstruction. Today we are on our way to making the most biocompatible form of natural silk available for other novel medical applications.

Our Founders

We are scientists who believed there was a better way—a healthier way—to make the products we love. That's why we founded Silk Inc. in 2013. It's our passion and our life's work.

Dr Gregory Altman

Co-Founder and CEO

A leading expert in natural silk biomaterials, Greg heads strategy and innovation at Silk Inc. His extensive research into silk’s biocompatibility with the human body led to the creation of his first company, Serica Technologies, where he and Beck developed the first FDA-approved silk-based medical device for soft tissue reconstruction. This breakthrough technology was acquired by Allergan, where Greg served as Vice President of Research and Development and General Manager before co-founding Silk in 2013. The inventor for several patents on clean silk technology, Greg holds a PhD in Biotechnology Engineering and BS in Chemistry from Tufts University. He is married to an environmental sociologist and is the proud father of two young boys.

Dr Rebecca Lacouture

Co-Founder, President and COO

With a passion for clean solutions for human health, Beck leads Silk Inc.’s development, engineering and operations. Her findings have led to critical advancements in silk technology, and she is the inventor for several patents on the structure of silk biomaterials. Beck spearheaded research and development at Serica Technologies and Allergan before co-founding Silk in 2013. She was named one of Boston Business Journal’s 40 under 40 in 2015. Beck earned her PhD in Biomedical Engineering and BS in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts University. When not in the lab, she can be found spending time with her husband and young son.
